LONG THE BASIS
A situation by which an individual or company that own or has bought a commodity such as oil, gold, and lumber, hedges its position by selling futures contracts on the commodity possessed. This provides commodity holders a guaranteed price that they can sell the commodities if the market price goes against their underlying position.
