UPTICK

An Uptick is a transaction or a business deal for a financial instrument that surpasses the previous transaction in price. If the price of a stock rose in relation to the last trade or ‘tick’ then an uptick has happened. Upticks are significant due to the uptick rule which originally states that only in an uptick can you make a short sale. The 2008-09 volatility surge and the unparalleled bearish mood in the market are attributed by market experts to the 2007 repeal of the US uptick rule in July.
