THE GREAT RECESSION
Sharp plunge the US economy experienced during the late 2000s, generally viewed as the biggest downturn since the Great Depression. The phrase was applied to the two periods of US recession in 2007 and in 2009. The economic downfall started when the US housing market declined substantially, and huge amounts of mortgage-backed securities and derivatives wiped out significant value.
