GROSS PRODUCTION TAX
State tax levied on companies generating revenues by depleting non-renewable resources. Firms include producers of oil and gas, as well as miners of coal, metals, and minerals. Normally, these are introduced as a way of compensating the state for the pollution these miners throw out. Also called severance tax.
