TIME DEPOSIT

Interest-bearing deposit held for a fixed term, meaning the depositor can only withdraw the funds upon notifying the bank or financial institution. A savings account or certificate of deposit (CD), this deposit has a set maturity date. A bank requires depositors to give notice 30 days prior to withdrawing funds from a savings account. But passbook accounts are normally considered readily available funds; hence, account holders can withdraw money without giving notice in advance. In the case of CDs, these are issued for a specified term, normally between 30 days and five years. Penalties are imposed for early withdrawal although money can be taken out from CDs without giving notice (on demand).
