MUTUAL COMPANY
A private company that is made up of its clients or policyholders. Since its customers are also the owners, these shareholders are entitled to receive profits or income, normally in the form of dividends on a pro rata basis, meaning it is based on the amount of business each customer does with the firm. Also referred to as cooperative.
