A financial intermediary that specializes primarily in huge and complex financial transactions such as underwriting, serving as the middleman between a securities issuer and the investing public, facilitating mergers and other corporate reorganizations, and acting as a broker and/or financial adviser for institutional clients. Major investment banks include Barclays, BofA Merrill Lynch, Citibank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, and UBS, among others. Some banks specialize in certain industry sectors while others have retail operations that cater small and individual customers.
