COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN INVESTMENT IN THE UNITED STATES - CFIUS

Inter-agency committee evaluating financial transactions to determine if it will lead to a foreign individual overseeing a US business. Specifically, it focuses on transactions where foreign control will result in a national security threat. The US Treasury Department chairs the agency and has members from other agencies including the Department of Defense and the Department of State. CFIUS stemmed from Defense Production Act of 1950, but became more active in 1975 after former President Gerald Ford signed the Executive Order 11858.
