Currency abbreviation or symbol of Indian rupee, the official currency of India. The currency, first issued in 1770 is comprised of 100 paise and is often shown with the symbol Rs. The Indian government decided to look for a new symbol for the rupee. In July 2010, it took on the symbol ra (₹) on coins and banknotes.
