GROUP OF 77

Biggest intergovernmental coalition of developing countries in the United Nations. Established in 1964, it has expanded to 133 members. Member countries are allowed to jointly leverage their negotiating capacity in relation to key international economic matters within UN. The group also promotes collective economic interests and works to more swiftly facilitate South-South cooperative efforts to nurture development. Group of 77 first held their meeting in 1967, which led to a proposed institutional structure called Charter of Algiers. Also known as G-77.
